This exceptional two-register chronograph from the early 1940s is regarded as a true crown jewel and unique piece from the house of Venus – combining several rare features.
The oversized stainless steel case with its 40 mm diameter is an absolute rarity for its time. While watch cases in the 1940s were generally much smaller, this impressive size gives the watch a remarkable presence on the wrist today, making it highly desirable among vintage collectors.
At the heart of this timepiece beats the ultra-rare black galvanic dial in an unusual configuration: the 30-minute counter is positioned at 12 o’clock, and the small seconds at 6 o’clock – instead of the more common placement at 3 and 9 o’clock. This rare layout not only gives the watch a distinctive look but also sets it clearly apart from other chronographs of its era. The harmonious design is further enhanced by a tachymeter scale along the outer edge of the dial and bold Arabic numerals, adding depth and complexity to the overall appearance. The allure of black galvanic dials has long fascinated vintage collectors – yet a condition as perfect as on this example is extremely rare and simply breathtaking, even within this exclusive segment.
This Venus chronograph is considered a unique piece among collectors. Its outstanding condition underscores the irreplaceable character of this watch. It is no surprise that in 2018 it earned a place in the renowned book "FERO – 150 Stainless Steel Chronographs".
About Venus
In 1902, master watchmaker Paul Arthur Schwarz, together with his wife Olga Etienne-Schwarz, began producing timepieces in La Chaux-de-Fonds under various brand names – the most famous being Venus. From the very beginning, production was divided into two areas: on the one hand, complete wristwatches, which quickly became synonymous with elegance and innovation; on the other, high-quality movements that powered some of the most renowned brands of the time – particularly chronographs. The technically outstanding Venus watches soon conquered the world: Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev was seen wearing a model on his wrist, and even the highest circles of the Vatican were supplied with several examples.
